| On 12th and
13th April 1997, the Second International Symposium Against Drugs in Switzerland was held in Zofingen. Speakers from all major fields presented their analyses of the drug problem. The chief organisers were the national medical associations AIDS Information Switzerland and Swiss Physicians against Drugs, and there were also 32 bodies acting as co-organisers.
More than 600 delegates from 15 countries participated. 65 speakers gave talks to up to three parallel events on the various aspects of the problems of drugs and HIV. In the course of the weekend, renowned scientists, parliamentarians, police specialists and experts working in the field of drugs from all over the world, as well as a number of ex-addicts, presented the main features of their activities and their experiences. Of special interest were the contributions made by parliamentarians from France and the USA, and especially the presence of an official delegate from the American government. The highlight was the exchange of scientific findings from the entire spectrum of the drugs problem. Scientists and experts from the field of drugs demonstrated the link between drugs and crime, showed the negative consequences and the damage to health caused by taking drugs, refuted the myth of so-called "harm reduction", and pointed out the successes of other states in connection with the prevention of HIV among drug addicts, or reported on new sources of danger. |
